The Joy of using handtools for making furniture. Workshop by Craig Johnson

  • Winona County History Center

Craig Johnson of Studio Tupla in Saint Paul, Minnesota will lead a demonstration and discussion on the valuable role that hand tools play in the creation of his handmade furniture.

Craig is an established furniture maker who has developed a balance between the use of hand tools and machines in his work.  While considering safety and expediency in his tool selections, he is as intent on finding enjoyment in his work as he is on achieving fine results for his clients. Craig's furniture honors the materials that nature has worked so patiently to create.  His attention to the grain of the wood, the development of hand planed surfaces and the execution of joinery has put him in a class of furniture makers rarely seen.

The day will start with a guided tour of The Art of Fine Furniture exhibit with an intimate look at Craig's "Vidar's Chair".  This chair was made by Craig while engaging in an intense study of furniture making at Inside Passage School of Fine Cabinetmaking on Canada’s Pacific Coast. Inside Passage is a small school led by Robert Van Norman, a former student of James Krenov.  Krenov is widely regarded as one of the most influential woodworkers, furniture makers and teachers in the studio furniture movement.  The session continues at the workbench, where Craig will demonstrate many of the hand tools often seen on his bench. There will be ample time for questions and discussion as Craig shares his appreciation for the rewards of making furniture by hand.
